I don’t not like to judge, even when the situation may seem
obviously dastardly; therefore, I gave Hanna and Michael’s relationship a
chance before prematurely deciding that it was a sick, doomed affair.
After completing part two, I understand why their relationship
is unhealthy, especially for Michael, but I do not think their relationship is
wrong for the reasons many people would.
It is not so much the sexual parts that I think are unhealthy, but the
way Hanna builds her dominance over Michael and establishes their relationship
as one of master and her toy. She is
able to do this thanks to many years of experience that Michael has not faced
yet, and she takes advantage of his naivety to fuck with his mind and make him
a slave to his emotions. While Michael is completely invested in her for the
majority of Part 1, she makes it clear from the beginning that he is disposable
to her, and only an object of amusement.
This keeps him on edge, constantly worried about making the wrong move
and pushing her away; his apprehension leaves her in the driver’s seat of their
relationship, exactly where she wants to be.
At first, I was not sure whether Hanna really did feel hurt
in some way over some of Michael’s seemingly innocent decisions, but after the
incident with the note on the biking trip, I learned not to buy into her
shit.
Only towards the end of the story did Michael begin to grow
some balls, and I am confident that this is why Hanna left him. She began to grow soft and more needy as
Michael developed more of a social life, almost in a reverse fashion when
observing how Michael used to follow her around like a lost puppy. When she realized that he finally had a life
without her and that she was no longer his number one priority, she left.
